I haven’t seen All-American Muslim, but I have some familiarity with Dearborn and the Muslim communities around Detroit. And if the show’s purpose is to show that a harmonious American Muslim identity is possible, then the only people who should have a problem with it are the conspiratorial murderous bigots known as al-Qaida.

But as Ice-T once observed: shit ain’t like that. It’s real fucked up.

Lowe’s pulled its ads from All-American Muslim under pressure from some all-American bigots who reserve unto themselves the right to define Americanness. Russell Simmons says what needs to be said:

“This can’t happen in America; [Lowe's] needs to fix this immediately,” Simmons said, calling the move Islamophobic. “They can’t get away with that, it’s ridiculous. There are American principals at stake here. I can’t imagine the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP, the National Urban League, or any organization that fights for their own rights will allow this to happen to any other group because they know they’re next.”

What a wonderful world it would be if we made solidarity the default operating principle of our politics. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. An attack on your neighbor today based on an arbitrary definition of Americanness will target you tomorrow. But self-appointed culture police tend to back down under pressure. What side are you on, Lowe’s?
